A note from the Executive Director

Life Skills Aren’t Just for Homelessness

—They’re for Life

One of the most common misconceptions among people experiencing homelessness is the belief that they need to learn certain skills because they are homeless. They think they need financial literacy training because of their housing situation, or emotional regulation because of their past struggles. But the truth is, these are skills that everyone needs—not just those who have experienced homelessness.

Think about it. Maybe you learned financial literacy from a formal course, or maybe it was just modeled in your home. Maybe you had a parent or mentor who taught you how to manage emotions, or maybe you learned by watching those around you. Unfortunately, many of our clients didn’t have that foundation. Instead, they grew up in environments where poor financial habits, emotional outbursts, or substance use were the norm. Now, as adults, they’re working to unlearn those patterns and build new, healthier ones.

This is what makes their journey so remarkable. They are not just learning life skills—they are overcoming years of trauma to do so. They are showing up, taking classes, and pushing forward despite the odds. The resilience and determination they demonstrate every day should be recognized and celebrated.

Because these skills aren’t about homelessness. They’re about being human.

Thanks,

Melissa
