C-U at Home has been working with several community organizations for the last few years to bring emergency shelter back to the Champaign-Urbana community. As shocking as it may seem, we have not had emergency shelter in the area for over 20 years! We currently run the C-U Men's Emergency Shelter, which is open each night and provides a safe space for individuals to receive rest from the elements. Please see more about the history of the shelter below and how you can get involved as we partner with Austin's Place to provide women's year-round emergency shelter.

Looking Ahead

As we have committed to providing both men's and women's emergency shelter in 2020 and beyond, we have some obstacles in front of us. With the addition of shelter comes the added cost of about $300,000, which is why we are asking the community to help us step into the gap and raise the extra needed funds. You can do this by giving to our annual fundraiser, One Winter Night, giving a general donation, or becoming a Hope Giver, our monthly donor program.

2016 - The shelter began in 2016 through a unique collaboration of community organizations and individuals.  This work was done as a response to the fact that Champaign County had no emergency shelter for men struggling with homelessness.  C-U at Home, Faith United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, The United Way,  and New Covenant Fellowship partnered together to provide a safe and warm space for our neighbors.  During that first season, the shelter was housed at First Presbyterian five nights of the week and at Faith UMC during the remaining 2 nights.

2017 - The shelter was incorporated into a distinct 501(c)3 and named the C-U Men’s Shelter.  During the second season the shelter was housed at New Covenant Fellowship each night of the week from November 20 through March 31.

2018 - During the third season, the shelter was housed at C-U at Home's new location at 70 E. Washington St. (formerly the Times Center) in Champaign. This move allowed us to house more men each night.

2019 - During the fourth and current season, the shelter was housed and fully staffed by C-U at Home. From the beginning, the goal of the collaboration between faith communities, homeless service providers, and community organizations was to find a permanent location and year-round option for emergency shelter.

2020: The C-U Men's shelter continues to operate under the umbrella of C-U at Home. As we look to the future, we are currently raising funds, an extra $300,000, to be able to provide men's AND women's (in partnership with Austin's Place) year-round emergency shelter.
