Sharing in another’s life experience builds empathy. One Winter Night is one small yearly opportunity to grow this empathy for our “friends without homes.” Yet the thing I love most about the Phoenix shelter is that their work is not based around just a once-a-year experience. They focus year-round on creating a space that allows relationships to be formed and connections to be made so that love and empathy for others can grow.
Many of us have so much and live lives full of abundance. One Winter Night, and more so the year-round work of the Phoenix, is a powerful challenge to take Jesus’ words seriously when he told us, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” I am honored to have the opportunity to share in the experience of our “friends without homes” box community during OWN, and ask that you would partner with me financially to help the Phoenix continue a ministry that I truly feel lays up eternal treasure through the relational and gospel driven investments they make in the lives of so many.
About the Event
Believe it or not, on any given night, literally hundreds of people in Champaign County do not spend the night in their own home. Some sleep with friends. Others sleep in shelters. Some sleep in cars. And others sleep outside. C-U at Home One Winter Night raises awareness about those who are homeless, helping others realize that someday that could be me.
One Winter Night will be held in the heart of downtown Champaign on Friday, February 3, from 6pm-6am. We hope to have at least 200 people spend the night outside in a cardboard box for 12 hours. We will be hosting educational presentations about various topics related to homelessness from 7pm-10pm. We will also be featuring our full-length documentary, The Phoenix: Hope Is Rising, every 2 hours throughout the night, starting at 10pm. This documentary takes you from the birth of C-U at Home all the way up to the future of our ministry. You can find out more about the documentary and find out how you can host a screening of the film at: www.thephoenixhopeisrising.com
NEW this year is the OWN Children's Corner! It's a place where young people can learn more about our friends without an address. Story times at 7:15pm, 8:15pm, and 9:15pm. Activities that we do at The Phoenix Daytime Drop-in Center. Writing notes and drawing pictures for our friends at The Phoenix. It's sure to be a great opportunity for your kids to learn and grow right along with other kids.
The goal this year for C-U at Home One Winter Night is $200,000, which will be about 2/3 of our 2017 annual budget.
