OWN 2017 Participants - Marsha Gates and Holly Swaim
Marsha Gates and Holly Swaim, Quest United Methodist Church
This is my second year to participate in One Winter Night. I was very apprehensive last year about spending a cold night in a box on the street. It was an amazing experience with so many people from the community experiencing for one night what our friends without a permanent address experience many nights during the winter! I feel that until you walk in their shoes one does not fully understand what it is like to be cold. I hope that anyone who is willing to help contribute will help me to raise the funds that are needed.
A friend nudged me toward participating in One Winter Night and I thought "how bad can it be?" That evening I had to fill my car with gas and it felt like I was going to freeze during that 10 minute task. Clearly, I have no concept of what hardship can fall on someone who does not have an address, especially in the middle of winter. Now is my time to experience a fraction of what homeless folks feel on a daily basis. I am excited to partner with C-U at Home in this venture since are working hard to help people without an address. - Holly
About the Event
Believe it or not, on any given night, literally hundreds of people in Champaign County do not spend the night in their own home. Some sleep with friends. Others sleep in shelters. Some sleep in cars. And others sleep outside. C-U at Home One Winter Night raises awareness about those who are homeless, helping others realize that someday that could be me.
One Winter Night will be held in the heart of downtown Champaign on Friday, February 3, from 6pm-6am. We hope to have at least 200 people spend the night outside in a cardboard box for 12 hours. We will be hosting educational presentations about various topics related to homelessness from 7pm-10pm. We will also be featuring our full-length documentary, The Phoenix: Hope Is Rising, every 2 hours throughout the night, starting at 10pm. This documentary takes you from the birth of C-U at Home all the way up to the future of our ministry. You can find out more about the documentary and find out how you can host a screening of the film at: www.thephoenixhopeisrising.com
NEW this year is the OWN Children's Corner! It's a place where young people can learn more about our friends without an address. Story times at 7:15pm, 8:15pm, and 9:15pm. Activities that we do at The Phoenix Daytime Drop-in Center. Writing notes and drawing pictures for our friends at The Phoenix. It's sure to be a great opportunity for your kids to learn and grow right along with other kids.
The goal this year for C-U at Home One Winter Night is $200,000, which will be about 2/3 of our 2017 annual budget.
