OWN 2017 Participants - Kara Jo and Jakob Miller
Kara Jo and Jakob Miller, (Camp WBGL)
My son Jakob had come to me and asked if we could help people in some way. He is always wanting to lend a helping hand. Jakob has had a HUGE heart since the day he was old enough to speak his own opinion. Later in the week he was listening to WBGL, and Randy and Monica were talking about the Phoenix project, and asking for Box Dweller volunteers. Jakob came running in the other room to get me, and asked if we could participate in this. I'll be honest, sleeping in the cold for 12 hours wasn't what I had in mind for a volunteer project. God was really working on me through Jakob though. I asked Jakob if we could maybe find an "indoor" volunteer opportunity. Jakob quickly reminded me how blessed we are to have a warm home, and a comfy bed to sleep in. He said "Mom, these people have to sleep outside every night, so we can do it for one night to help them out, God wants us to do this, Mom!" Of course I said yes! How could I say no to my son who is wanting to change lives, and live out a selfless act, and to God! We have been praying about this opportunity, and we are so excited to be able to be a part of this event!!

About the Event
Believe it or not, on any given night, literally hundreds of people in Champaign County do not spend the night in their own home. Some sleep with friends. Others sleep in shelters. Some sleep in cars. And others sleep outside. C-U at Home One Winter Night raises awareness about those who are homeless, helping others realize that someday that could be me.
One Winter Night will be held in the heart of downtown Champaign on Friday, February 3, from 6pm-6am. We hope to have at least 200 people spend the night outside in a cardboard box for 12 hours. We will be hosting educational presentations about various topics related to homelessness from 7pm-10pm. We will also be featuring our full-length documentary, The Phoenix: Hope Is Rising, every 2 hours throughout the night, starting at 10pm. This documentary takes you from the birth of C-U at Home all the way up to the future of our ministry. You can find out more about the documentary and find out how you can host a screening of the film at: www.thephoenixhopeisrising.com
NEW this year is the OWN Children's Corner! It's a place where young people can learn more about our friends without an address. Story times at 7:15pm, 8:15pm, and 9:15pm. Activities that we do at The Phoenix Daytime Drop-in Center. Writing notes and drawing pictures for our friends at The Phoenix. It's sure to be a great opportunity for your kids to learn and grow right along with other kids.
The goal this year for C-U at Home One Winter Night is $200,000, which will be about 2/3 of our 2017 annual budget.
