OWN 2017 Participants - Jason and Kenzie Young (Camp WBGL)
Jason and Kenzie Young (Camp WBGL)
I have always had a heart for people out on the streets. I don’t like to use the term Homeless because I believe it puts a label on them. They are people just like us. I would like to understand how they feel on a regular basis. If I can learn to understand this, I think I will be able to find ways to help them in ways that wouldn’t be offensive. When I get older, my dream is to own shelters for them and make the houses feel like actual homes. Not with hard beds and worn sheets, but soft beds, new sheets, a wardrobe full of new clothes that they can use, and showers so that they can clean up for anything that they might need it for whether it be for interviews, or they just need to feel clean. People are people and should be treated as such. I can’t change everyone’s life for the better, but I sure can change someone’s life for the better.
In order to help deepen my understanding for people on the streets, my dad and I are going to join the WBGL team on One Winter Night. One Winter Night is a community awareness event held in downtown Champaign for 12 hours regardless of the weather. During the evening, each participant receives a refrigerator size cardboard box to sleep in for the night. Other than that, the clothes we are wearing and the items we bring are all we will have for the evening. This will help us to experience what people on the streets experience.
This event will take place on February 3, 2017. In order to participate in this event, we will need to raise a total of $2,000. It would be very much appreciated if you sponsored us in this fundraiser. Please don’t feel obligated to, but it would be much appreciated if you could sponsor us.

About the Event
Believe it or not, on any given night, literally hundreds of people in Champaign County do not spend the night in their own home. Some sleep with friends. Others sleep in shelters. Some sleep in cars. And others sleep outside. C-U at Home One Winter Night raises awareness about those who are homeless, helping others realize that someday that could be me.
One Winter Night will be held in the heart of downtown Champaign on Friday, February 3, from 6pm-6am. We hope to have at least 200 people spend the night outside in a cardboard box for 12 hours. We will be hosting educational presentations about various topics related to homelessness from 7pm-10pm. We will also be featuring our full-length documentary, The Phoenix: Hope Is Rising, every 2 hours throughout the night, starting at 10pm. This documentary takes you from the birth of C-U at Home all the way up to the future of our ministry. You can find out more about the documentary and find out how you can host a screening of the film at: www.thephoenixhopeisrising.com
NEW this year is the OWN Children's Corner! It's a place where young people can learn more about our friends without an address. Story times at 7:15pm, 8:15pm, and 9:15pm. Activities that we do at The Phoenix Daytime Drop-in Center. Writing notes and drawing pictures for our friends at The Phoenix. It's sure to be a great opportunity for your kids to learn and grow right along with other kids.
The goal this year for C-U at Home One Winter Night is $200,000, which will be about 2/3 of our 2017 annual budget.
