I would like to be a box dweller because I have become more and more passionate about helping those without an address over this past semester. I have made many friends without an address and want to do my part in making sure they have ample opportunity to overcome the hand they have been dealt and live a comfortable life. I take for granted all too often everything I have been blessed with, and having those luxuries taken away from me, even if just for a night, will be a very good experience and hopefully only increase my heart for those less fortunate.
I would love to be a box dweller because over the past year I feel that God has really given me a passion to help those without an address. I would love to help them in anyway that I can.
I spent this past summer in inner city Chicago, and I look back at the many homeless people I talked and prayed with. I realized how much my heart breaks for those who don't have a safe and secure place to go home to at night. It made me sad hearing about their situations, but it broke my heart even more to hear about how people have treated them. I want to be a person that is different from the masses, someone who acknowledges and befriends the homeless. I also love the vision and mission of C-U at Home and really believe what they are doing is unique and important.
About the Event
Believe it or not, on any given night, literally hundreds of people in Champaign County do not spend the night in their own home. Some sleep with friends. Others sleep in shelters. Some sleep in cars. And others sleep outside. C-U at Home One Winter Night raises awareness about those who are homeless, helping others realize that someday that could be me.
One Winter Night will be held in the heart of downtown Champaign on Friday, February 3, from 6pm-6am. We hope to have at least 200 people spend the night outside in a cardboard box for 12 hours. We will be hosting educational presentations about various topics related to homelessness from 7pm-10pm. We will also be featuring our full-length documentary, The Phoenix: Hope Is Rising, every 2 hours throughout the night, starting at 10pm. This documentary takes you from the birth of C-U at Home all the way up to the future of our ministry. You can find out more about the documentary and find out how you can host a screening of the film at: www.thephoenixhopeisrising.com
NEW this year is the OWN Children's Corner! It's a place where young people can learn more about our friends without an address. Story times at 7:15pm, 8:15pm, and 9:15pm. Activities that we do at The Phoenix Daytime Drop-in Center. Writing notes and drawing pictures for our friends at The Phoenix. It's sure to be a great opportunity for your kids to learn and grow right along with other kids.
The goal this year for C-U at Home One Winter Night is $200,000, which will be about 2/3 of our 2017 annual budget.
