OWN 2017 Participants - Carolyn Kodes
Carolyn Kodes, English Teacher and PBF Certified Trainer, Champaign Central High School
As a citizen of this country I have been extraordinarily privileged. I have always had a roof over my head and have been able to keep my children warm and safe. I know that many of my fellow citizens do not have the luxury of a permanent home for themselves or their children. I cannot imagine the fear and uncertainty that our homeless community members must feel on a daily basis. Our democracy is strengthened when we help one another and lift each other up. I think if we were able to walk in the shoes of our homeless brothers and sisters we would feel moved to act. I feel compelled to do something to support the organizations that work so hard to help the most vulnerable among us. Please join me by contributing what you can. We are only as strong as our compassion for others.
About the Event
Believe it or not, on any given night, literally hundreds of people in Champaign County do not spend the night in their own home. Some sleep with friends. Others sleep in shelters. Some sleep in cars. And others sleep outside. C-U at Home One Winter Night raises awareness about those who are homeless, helping others realize that someday that could be me.
One Winter Night will be held in the heart of downtown Champaign on Friday, February 3, from 6pm-6am. We hope to have at least 200 people spend the night outside in a cardboard box for 12 hours. We will be hosting educational presentations about various topics related to homelessness from 7pm-10pm. We will also be featuring our full-length documentary, The Phoenix: Hope Is Rising, every 2 hours throughout the night, starting at 10pm. This documentary takes you from the birth of C-U at Home all the way up to the future of our ministry. You can find out more about the documentary and find out how you can host a screening of the film at: www.thephoenixhopeisrising.com
NEW this year is the OWN Children's Corner! It's a place where young people can learn more about our friends without an address. Story times at 7:15pm, 8:15pm, and 9:15pm. Activities that we do at The Phoenix Daytime Drop-in Center. Writing notes and drawing pictures for our friends at The Phoenix. It's sure to be a great opportunity for your kids to learn and grow right along with other kids.
The goal this year for C-U at Home One Winter Night is $200,000, which will be about 2/3 of our 2017 annual budget.

Your tax-deductible financial gift will enable us to house and support the most vulnerable homeless in our area. Our goal with C-U at Home One Winter Night is to raise enough money to house and support many additional residents from our community in 2017.
